Determined to know the actual number of genuine workers in the Benue state civil service, the state government is set to use the modified table payment system in the payment of its workers in the month of June.
State Deputy Governor and chairman of the Emergency Committee on Salary Payment, Engr Benson Abounu disclosed this after the commttee met on Tuesday at his office.
He disclosed that the exercise which seeks to reveal the exact wage bill of civil servants in the state would help bring it down to a manageable level such that payment to workers can be sustained as and when due.
Engr Abounu stated that adequate arrangements that would guarantee speedy, orderly and hitch-free exercise shall be put in place and assured workers that none of them would be made to suffer as a result of the screening.
He explained that the exercise shall hold at specially selected places with seating arrangements adding that after been identified and certified as genuine workers, those certified shall be issued warrant which they shall then take to their banks for eventual payment.
The deputy governor who called for the cooperation of Benue workers said the screening is central in the task of finding solutions to the salary crisis in the state, explaining that it is when ghost workers have been flushed out, salary padding stopped and other forms of malpractices eliminated that a reasonable and sustenable wage bill can be obtained.
He recounted a case under investigation at the moment where a teacher on less than N100,000 per month had N10m paid into his account. When he visited the bank to find out what it was, a bank staff collected the paper from him and and within minutes, the whole money was gone.
He restated the resolve of the state government to stamp out all forms of salary malpractices that have bedeviled salary payment in the state.
