Governor Samuel Ortom today stated that a bill that would prescribe punitive measures against those who harbor possessors of illegal arms and other criminals would soon be presented to the state Assembly.
He spoke at Ajio in Kwande local government area during the funeral of the late Anna Nungwa, mother of member representing Kwande West at the Assembly, Mr. Benjamin Nungwa.
Governor Ortom stated that the punitive measures would include the demolition of the premises of those who harbor criminals and called on citizens to provide information that would lead to their arrest.
He said apart from securing lives and property there was need to provide security for investors to feel safe enough to invest in the state.
The Governor said the activities of vandals in the Niger Delta region coupled with the falling prices of oil as well as fraudulent activities were responsible for the challenge of salary payment but said measures were being taken to overcome the difficulty.
He said the state's total wage bill was N7.8 billion while monthly receipts from the federation account were about N5 billion leaving a deficit of over N3 billion every month that has accumulated as arrears running into several months stressing that 34 states in the country had similar problems.
The Governor appealed to indigenes to intensify efforts in the agriculture sector using facilities secured by the state for them at the apex financial institution as well as Bank of Industry in order to overcome the recession.
He said the deceased who lived a Christian life to the end had left a challenge for the living to be prepared to meet the creator as she did and urged all to emulate her lifestyle that made her to live more than 30 years above the life expectancy of 70 years stated in the Bible.
Governor Ortom also said public hearing on the anti grazing bill would soon be carried out and expressed optimism that once the anti grazing bill was passed into law, activities of herdsmen in the state would be regulated such that crisis with farmers would be minimised.
The first Class Traditional Ruler of Kwande, Chief Ambrose Iyortyer, charged his subjects to reciprocate the goodwill of the Tiv people which made them select their paramount ruler among them by being of good behaviour.
Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, who commended the Governor for his support for members in times of need, pledged cooperation to enable him discharge his mandate.
The Chief Mourner, Mr. Nungwa expressed gratitude to the people for identifying with him especially Governor Ortom who he said contributed much to the success of the burial.
