Rivers Pensioners Protest Against Wike

Hundreds of retirees from various ministries in the Rivers State Civil Service yesterday protested against the failure of the government of Nyesom Wike to pay their benefits after leaving service two years ago.

The retirees blocked the entrance to the Government House, Port Harcourt accusing Governor Wike of being insensitive to their plight.

The leader of the group Monday Udoh told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the Rivers State government has refused to pay them despite completing their biometric verification.

Some of the affected retirees who spoke vowed to remain at the Government House gate until Wike personally addressed their grievances.

This is not the first time that workers of Rivers State are up in arms against Governor Wike. Recently, workers and traders in all major markets within Rivers State protested the introduction of a fraudulent N2,000 levy which the government of the state called "Governor's Perfume Levy". All workers and traders were forced to pay for Governor Wike's expensive perfumes.

Port Harcourt was nearly shut down by protesting groups who viewed the levy as a wicked and anti-people policy.
