It was a dream come true for the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) as the era of lies regarding claims and ownership of the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill has been laid to rest. The smoke of deceit from the National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC) has been cleared with the adoption of a long awaited Bill of the PCN following the laying of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
Today being Tuesday 25th July, 2017, a milestone was attained; a paradigm shift from the odious record of the past was established and in the words of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, “…on this long journey, we finally get to the promise land”. It was a swift seating and report laying of the harmonised Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Peace Corps – finally, it has been adopted.
Conference Committee Report of both chambers in section 11, part (viii) dissolved the existing PCN into Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC). That same Report of section 12, also categorically posits that the National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC) Bill was not in the House of Representatives version, which clearly implies that NUPEC is not a part of the Bill (find attached the conference committee report for your perusal)
However, in addressing the outcome, the National Commandant has assured that in line with relevant provisions of the Bill, all youth organisations and generally youths within the age limits of 18 to 35 will be accommodate. This would be done through laid down rules and not through the back door.
In furtherance of the ecstasy and height attained, the totality of Nigerian Youth can now heave a sigh of relief as they look up to the next and final phase of transformation process of the Peace Corps of Nigeria into the Nigerian Peace Corps. Nothing can be most appealing than the Presidential Assent.
No amount of appreciation will be sufficient in eulogizing the National Assembly for a job well done. It has really been frustrating and time-consuming, but finally, we have breasted the tape of victory. This victory was principally attained because of the doggedness of the National Commandant of the PCN, Amb. (Dr) Dickson A. O. Akoh and his lieutenants in the Corps, who courageously stood firm by him through thick and thin.
Lastly, to all Officers and Men of the PCN, this is our “SUCCESS”, and as we continue to march forward, we call on God to touch the heart of Mr President for an expeditious Assent to the Bill. We continue to live for National creativity, Peace and Youth Development. We are One of Peace Men!!!
